Summer in Siskiyou
Whit and I ventured down to Northern California to see what all the area had to offer. We started in the Southern region of the area and experienced the waterfalls, lakes, and nice little mountain towns all looming beneath the 14,180 foot giant that is Mount Shasta. We hiked around the McCloud Falls area, soaked our bones in the cold and clear water beneath the falls, enjoyed dinner in the quaint town of Mt. Shasta, and hiked to Heart Lake for sunset.
After a short night of rest, we were at the trailhead for Castle Lake Lookout again by 4am to start our sunrise hike. The short, but stout hike was the perfect way to wake us up and shake off our tiredness. As we approached the top of our hike, the sun began to rise, the birds began to wake up, and the morning chill began to burn off. We soaked up the view for a bit longer before heading back to the trailhead and back to town for a post-hike breakfast at Big Bear Diner!
After our breakfast and a coffee break at Yak's Mount Shasta Koffee and Eatery, we were back on the road and headed to the East Side of Siskiyou County. The East Side consists of a much more desert like landscape that is a bit more arid than the Shasta area. In this area, we were able to explore Lava Beds National Monument, which hosts many underground lava tubes that were formed many, many years ago. The East also hosts the Klamath National Wildlife Refuge and many small farming communities.
On our last day, we were flying back to Seattle in the evening, but we wanted to take full advantage of the time we had left in Siskiyou. So we headed back to the South, passing through Weed, and went back to Yak's for our coffee before heading back to Castle Lake to hang out and relax in a hammock before driving north to fly home.
The entire Siskiyou County region is full of many things to do and see and I can't wait to get back and explore the other regions that we couldn't get to in the short amount of time we were there. Big thanks to Discover Siskiyou for sponsoring this trip and getting us out there!
